Med Associates' three compartment conditioned place preference chambers for rat or mouse are available with your choice of manual or auto guillotine doors. The standard configuration includes a grid rod style floor in the white compartment and a mesh style floor in the black compartment. Animal position is tracked by infrared photobeam detectors installed along the chamber walls. A maximum of eight chambers may be operated from one computer.

Three Compartment Place Preference for Rat

These test chambers have been designed with three distinct compartments that can be separated by optional manual or automatic guillotine doors. Automated data collection is accomplished by adding fifteen infrared photobeam detectors. The overall inside dimensions are 8.25" W x 8.24" H x 26.75" L (21 cm x 21 cm x 68 cm). The base for this unit measures 34" long x 10" deep (86.4 cm x 25.4 cm). Mounting holes for the ENV-013IR Infrared Sensor Package are provided. This package places six photobeams across the white and black zones 0.5" (1.25 cm) from the end wall and 2" (5 cm) between beams. Three photobeams are placed across the gray zone spaced 1.875" (4.75 cm) apart. The ENV-013IR package and associated ENV-256C control must be ordered separately.

The center compartment is 4.75" (12 cm) long, finished neutral gray with a smooth PVC floor that can be removed for easy cleaning, and a hinged clear polycarbonate lid for loading a test animal.

The choice compartments are 11" (28 cm) long. One compartment is all black with a stainless steel grid rod floor consisting of 0.1875" (4.8 mm) rods, placed on 0.625" (16 mm) centers. The other is all white with a 0.5" x 0.5" (1.25 cm x 1.25 cm) stainless steel mesh floor. Stainless steel waste pans are provided beneath both choice floors. Additional floors may be added with rods on white frames and mesh on black frames. Optional ceiling light packages with manual dimmers are available to help balance the natural preference of the animal.

Three Compartment Place Preference for Mouse

The three compartment place preference for mouse features three distinct compartments that can be separated by optional manual or automatic guillotine doors. Automated data collection is accomplished by adding individual infrared photobeams or photobeam strips, similar to the rat test chamber, but with 6 beams for the white and black test areas and 2 beams for the center gray area.

The overall inside dimensions are 18.3" L x 5" W x 5" H (46.5 cm x 12.7 cm x 12.7 cm). This is divided into a center compartment that is 2.85" (7.2 cm) long, finished neutral gray with a smooth PVC floor that can be removed for easy cleaning, and a hinged clear polycarbonate lid for loading a test animal. The choice compartments measure 6.6" (16.8 cm) long. One compartment is all black with a stainless steel grid rod floor consisting of 1/8" (3.2 mm) rods placed on 5/16" (7.9 mm) centers. The other is all white with a 1/4" x 1/4" (6.35 mm x 6.35 mm) stainless steel mesh floor. Stainless steel waste pans are provided beneath both choice floors. Additional floors may be added with rods on white frames and mesh on black frames. Optional ceiling light packages with manual dimmers are also available to help balance the natural preference of the animal.

These motorized doors have been specially designed for the place preference compartments. The door creates a 1" (2.54 cm) thick arch that is gray on one side and black or white on the other. The door opening measures 3.5" W x 4" H (9 cm x 10 cm). The door operates on 28 V DC. Turn the door control line ON (ground) to open the door. Turning the control line OFF allows the door to free fall to the closed position.
