Maybe there could be a feature added where new topics are represented differently so people can see that a catagory has a new topic that maybe they have not seen yet.  Once more posts start going up, it will be hard to keep track.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. I think the diamond that is in front of each category does exactly what you describe.
