Self Administration Test
Packages for Rats

The self-administration test packages for rat include the following features: a modified top to allow the tether system to exit the chamber, a drug delivery arm assembly, and a rat self-infusion package containing a high-quality disposable plastic swivel, drug delivery line, metal spring tether, and plastic belly harness that the rat wears like a vest. All components are connected using luer-lock fixtures, providing ease of use.

A wide range of drug delivery options is available including variable speed and high-speed micro-liter pumps (ideal for nicotine) and pump swivels and tethers. An optional piece of equipment is a scrambled foot aversive stimulator. Please refer to “Aversive Stimulators and Drug Delivery” sections for details on these products.

Basic Rat Drug Self Administration Test Package—MDF SAC, Standard Modular Test Chamber, Fixed Levers, Standard Pump

This basic package features an extra tall MDF sound attenuating cubicle with a standard modular test chamber. Also included are these modular components: two fixed levers, two stimulus lights, a 45 mg pellet dispenser, and our standard single speed syringe pump with a 3.33 RPM motor. Order the MED-SYST-8 interface and software package to run up to eight test chambers or the MED-SYST-16 to run up to sixteen test chambers.

Drug Self Administration Test Package for Rat—Standard Chamber, Retractable Levers

This system features the same principle components as our MED-008-CT-B1 package (above), including the ENV-008CT rat operant conditioning chamber with modified top for self-administration work, PHM-119 Drug Delivery Assembly Package, PHM-100 syringe pump, ENV-221M stimulus lights, and ENV-018MD sound attenuating cubicle. This basic package offers the additional feature of having two ENV-112CM retractable response levers.

Oral Drug Self Administration Test Package for Rat—Syringe Pump

The MED-008-CT-B3 is the package of choice when precision delivery of liquid reinforcers is required. This package features our PHM-100 syringe pumps for liquid reinforcer delivery, offering more precise control over our liquid dipper style delivery system. The MED-008-CT-B3 package consists of our ENV-008 rat modular operant conditioning chamber with the CT top modification, an ENV-215M house light, two ENV-221M stimulus lights, two ENV-110M fixed response levers, and our ENV-203M 45 mg pellet dispenser, a standard in the industry. Oral reinforcer delivery is accomplished using two PHM-100 syringe pumps, PHM-122 drug delivery lines, and an ENV-200R3AM dual cup liquid receptacle. This allows two different liquid reinforces to be delivered. An ENV-018MD Deep Extra Tall MDF Sound Attenuating Cubicle encloses the operant conditioning chamber, keeping the experimental animal isolated from environmental disturbances during an experiment. By featuring the extra tall sound attenuating cubicle and the CT top modification on the ENV-008 chamber, this package allows the possibility of future upgrades to expand the use of this system for intravenous self administration work where the extra room is necessary to accommodate the drug infusion hardware.

Oral Drug Self Administration Test Package for Rat—Liquid Dipper

The MED-008-CT-B4 is a basic package allowing delivery of liquid reinforcers using a liquid dipper. The MED-008-CT-B4 package consists of our ENV-008 rat modular operant conditioning chamber with the CT top modification, an ENV-215M house light, two ENV-221M stimulus lights, and two ENV-110M fixed response levers. Oral reinforcer delivery is accomplished using an ENV-202M liquid dipper. An ENV-018MD Deep Extra Tall MDF Sound Attenuating Cubicle encloses the operant conditioning chamber, keeping the experimental animal isolated from environmental disturbances during an experiment.
