Olfactory System

Five Nose Poke Walls with Stimulus Lights

Shown with optional air and vacuum pumps.
Olfactory Stimulus is now available with the Five Nose Poke Walls with Stimulus Lights. These modified walls (ENV-115A-OF for rats and ENV-115C-OF for mice) allow individual olfactory stimulus in each nose poke. A pressurized laboratory air supply or air pump (sold separately) provides air to each individual scent source. A check valve between the one-to-five manifold and the scent source container prevents the mixing of scents when the system is not pressurized. A normally close valve prevents the scent stimulus from reaching the nose poke until the valve is activated. Only one scent source is connected to each nose poke. Activation of the control valve allows the olfactory stimulus to be presented in the nose poke. One or more of the valves may be activated at the same time depending on the protocol of the experiment. The olfactory stimulus is removed from the nose poke cavity via an exhaust port located in the roof of the cavity. All five nose pokes are connected to a five-into-one manifold that needs to be connected to a vacuum pump (sold separately). This system provides a continuous evacuation of air from all five nose pokes simultaneously when connected to a vacuum source.

System Highlights:
• Individual olfactory stimulus in each nose pokes
• A check valve prevents the mixing of scents
• One or more valves may be activated at the same time
• Olfactory stimulus is removed from the nose poke via an exhaust port.

PHM-275
Dilution Olfactometer

This dilution olfactometer comes with two channels and is expandable to eight channels.   It is designed to generate precise concentrations of up to eight separate odors.  Air flow to each vertical column saturator is controlled by a sensitive needle valve and monitored by a calibrated flow meter.  Valves activated by 28 V DC solenoids are used to mix odors and route air flow to the test chamber.  Standard nose poke response modules may be used with the ENV-275-NPP  or ENV-375-NPP Nose Poke Port options.  This system is suitable for odor discrimination tasks where flow control is critical, olfactory coding, or any behavioral or neurophsiological study using odor as a stimulus.

PHM-276
Olfactory Column Saturator

This expansion olfactory column saturator connects to the PHM-275.  Air flow is controlled by a sensitive needle valve and monitored by a calibrated flow meter.  Flow out of the column Saturator is controlled via a 28 V DC solenoid to mix odor.

ENV-275
Olfactory Stimulus Package

This economical package includes everything needed to present olfactory stimuli to a nose poke response or test chamber port (nose poke and port sold separately), two distribution manifolds, three solenoid valves, a evaporation jars with barbed fittings and check valves, and a coil of tubing for connecting these components. Pumps sold separately. The standard package uses two normally closed valves for the odor lines and a normally open valve for fresh air. This maintains a continuous flow of air at the nose poke port or at a bulkhead port if desired. By activating two valves simultaneously, odor can be added to the air stream without altering the flow. In this way the only stimulus is the odor not simply the presence or absence of the air flow. Operating controls sold separately. Contact Sales for details.

ENV-275-NPP
Nose Poke Port Option

Single cue (yellow) nose poke response with olfactory ports used to present an odor stimulus inside the nose poke.  Two barbed fittings are provided.  Attach the second port to a suitable vacuum pump to confine the odor to the nose poke as much as possible. Front panel removed to show air inlet/outlets.

ENV-275-BP (Rat)
ENV-375-BP (Mice)

Bulkhead Port

This 1/8 size modular panel comes with a small air port and barbed fitting for presenting odors to the chamber compartment.  This could be placed above or below any response lever, food cup, etc.

ENV-275-F (Rat)
ENV-375-F (Mice)

Modular Chamber Exhaust Fan

This panel mounted 28 Volt DC fans installs on the modular test chamber itself to increase air flow through the chamber and clear odors quicker. If using a sound attenuating cubicle, the cubicle fan ensures an amply supply of fresh air around the outside of the chamber.
