Test Environment for Rat
 |
This package will get you started making general activity measurements. This package includes a test environment (ENV-515) that measures 17.0" x 17.0" (43.2 cm x 43.2 cm), three 16 beam I/R arrays, 48 channel control, cables, interface card, power supply, and single station software. Up to eight test stations may be attached to a single computer. Computer sold separately.

System Features
- All experiments and subject data are entered into a database, with all subject data linked together. This allows the software to track everything, from automatically sequencing sessions to using the researcher's selection of available data parameters, and save it based on the assigned Subject ID.
- Up to a 50 ms scanning rate. This rate virtually eliminates phasing or aliasing of the stereotypic movement data and provides the highest resolution possible.
- All standard data are displayed in real time along with a cumulative plot of the subject's activity for all chambers.
- Experiment setup is made easier with a one screen setup, and allows one to choose the size of the chamber, thus allowing for distance traveled to be in real units (i.e., inches or centimeters) instead of beams broken.
- Automated file naming uses experiment, group and subject information to generate datafiles since all session data are automatically appended to existing data files. If you prefer, however, you can always choose a custom filename.
- Newly added rotational analysis option. You can choose to examine large (wide) or small (pivotal) rotations, allowing for rotational measures to be obtained on staggering, ataxic, lesioned, or other locomotor impaired mice or rats.
- The Windows-based software includes improved zonal analysis, the ability to change boundaries around the animal in post analysis, and the addition of velocity and ambulatory episodes. This can be done with saved data at any time.

Two chamber place preference is used for conditioned place preference paradigms. The two chamber place preference insert is simply a box that slides into the open field chamber. This insert covers the entire area of the chamber. The two sides of the box have been designed to provide distinct tactile environments to maximize contextual differences. One side of the box has a wire mesh floor while the other side has a grid rod floor. Since the walls are clear, different color and design patterns may be added between the wall of the insert and the wall of the test chamber as long as they do not block the photobeams. The lid is hinged to allow easy subject insertion and removal. A manual guillotine door can be inserted to block the arched doorway during conditioning that would normally allow the subject to pass freely between the two sides during testing. The open field activity software can parse the session data into zones to determine the number of entries into each chamber and the amount of time that a subject spends in each area. |
 |
The dark box insert is opaque to visible light and designed to cover half the area of the open field activity chamber. The two-compartment light/dark test, one of the classic indices of anxiety, can now be fully automated and performed while examining other components of locomotor activity. The time spent in the lit area and the associated exploratory behaviors are reliable parameters for assessing anxiolytic-like activity and may be useful for identifying anxiolytic and anxiogenic agents.
The Med Associates activity software can parse the data of a session into zones and determine the amount of time that a subject spent in both areas as well as the number of entries into each. Patterns of exploration can be examined by viewing the subject’s plot. The dark box insert is available for the standard mouse (ENV-510) and rat (ENV-515) chambers.
